IRS Extends Time To File WOTC Paperwork
On Friday, the IRS released notification that it was extending the time employers who want to claim the work opportunity tax credit (WOTC) have to file paperwork normally due within 28 days of an employee’s start date.

Washington State businesses earned $66 million in hiring-based tax credits
OLYMPIA — Washington employers received a record $66 million in tax credits from Uncle Sam for the 2011 tax-filing season for hiring certain hard-to-place job seekers. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit rewards employers who hire military veterans, the disabled, ex-inmates, food-stamp recipients and individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income. The tax credit can range from $2,400 to $9,600 for each eligible new hire.

California Doesn’t Need Enterprise Zones
Since 1986, California has used an “enterprise zone” program in an effort to spur investment and job creation in specified areas. The state awards tax credits, more than $700 million a year as of 2010, to businesses that hire designated kinds of workers within the zones. The program is popular with businesses and local officials.
