WOTC Questions: Do companies get a tax break for hiring disabled?

At CMS, as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) experts and service providers since 1997, we receive a lot of questions via our website’s chat box:

CMS Says: Yes, under the Vocational Rehabilitation Referral target group you could be eligible for a tax credit for hiring someone who qualifies in that category.

A Vocational Rehabilitation Referral is described as: An individual who has a physical or mental disability resulting in a substantial handicap to employment and who was referred to the employer upon completion of (or while receiving) rehabilitation services by a rehabilitation agency approved by the state, an employment network under the Ticket to Work program, or the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Value of the tax credit for a Vocational Rehabilitation Referral:

  • Worked at least 120 hours but less than 400 hours Up to $1,500 (25% of $6,000 of first-year wages)
  • Worked at least 400 hours Up to $2,400 (40% of $6,000 of first-year wages)
