Hurricane Irma Disaster Filing Extension for South Carolina

The State of South Carolina issued the following information to Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) consultants today:

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has granted tax relief for victims of Hurricane Irma in South Carolina.  For those affected by the disaster, the tax relief extends the 28-day Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) filing deadline to January 31, 2018, for WOTC requests that were due on or after September 6, 2017 and before January 31, 2018.

Specifically, this applies to WOTC certification requests containing an employment start date on or after August 8, 2017 and on or before January 2, 2018.  Businesses affected by this extension are those whose qualifying employee, company or WOTC consultant is located in a FEMA-declared disaster area.

The declared affected areas in South Carolina are the counties of Abbeville, Allendale, Anderson, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Edgefield, Georgetown, Hampton, Jasper, McCormick, Newberry, Oconee, Pickens and Saluda.

Because eligibility for the tax relief is identified by county, a characteristic not captured by the SC Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) online system, requests filed under this extension must be submitted by mail.
