WOTC Questions: How many years can an employers claim WOTC? If new employees are hired each year, can this credit be claimed back to back, i.e., 2017, 2018 & 2019

At CMS, as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) experts and service providers since 1997, we receive a lot of questions via our website’s chat box that we try to answer:

How many years can an employers claim WOTC? If new employees are hired each year, can this credit be claimed back to back, i.e., 2017, 2018 & 2019?

CMS Says: An employer can only claim credit once per employee/new hire. However, if you were unable to use the credits last year, or the year before, you can claim forward up to 20 years. So you could claim for someone who was hired in 2017 in 2020, 2021 or beyond as long as you have received certification for them. CMS can help you keep track of which years you claimed credit for each qualified employee.
