WOTC Questions: I work with prisoner reentry, and I help get them back to work, I was looking up the WOTC and how much an employer can get for hiring a felon?

At CMS, as Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) experts and service providers since 1997, we receive a lot of questions via our website’s chat box:

CMS Says: An ex-felon is someone who has been convicted of a felony under any federal or state law, and is hired not more than 1 year after the conviction or release from prison for that felony. The tax credit for hiring an ex-felon is:

  • Worked at least 120 hours but less than 400 hours Up to $1,500 (25% of $6,000 of first-year wages)
  • Worked at least 400 hours Up to $2,400 (40% of $6,000 of first-year wages)
